Any serious inductive switching applications that require fast pulse rise and fall times, and reliable operation, will need some kind of RC or RCD snubber circuit to protect the switches from potentially damaging high voltage transients. However, determining the values for these components can be a time-consuming and frustrating task, especially if one does not have a large range of component values available to determine the best combination empirically. In practice, the correct R and C values can be most simply determined empirically using capacitance and resistance decade boxes, but these can be expensive for most experimenters.

A simple circuit board with a matrix of the most common R and C values would be most advantageous, especially since most experimenters will want to test a wide variety of coils with their switches. Even if only one coil is used, the snubber circuit must constantly be adjusted if the supply voltage or input pulse width is changed significantly. This circuit board is useful not only for determining the R and C values, but it itself can serve as a permanent snubber circuit for prototype testing.
